Course Overview
The number of people living with Parkinson’s Disease is rapidly rising and the amount of relevant research on exercise and Parkinson’s has skyrocketed. In this course practitioners will be given the information and tools necessary to develop effective research-based exercise programs and falls training programs for people living with Parkinson’s Disease. Learning methods include a combination of lectures, practical work and hands on patient practice. Participants will learn the the ins and outs of training clients to fall properly and, while PD focused, much of the information provided in this course is applicable to exercise-based rehabilitation and falls training for both older adult and other neurological populations.
Learning Outcomes:
- How to teach falls!!
(Not just how to get up, but how to train and fall properly in the first place!) Learn about the research surrounding exercise and Parkinson’s Disease - Why specific exercise is a key component of treatment for this population
- How to build effective exercise-based treatment program
- How to use the FFM program to help clients improve function, minimize symptoms, reduce progression and optimize movement
- Practical tools to help develop an effective assessment
- Key components to developing a group class
- How to educate and motivate this population clinically
While this course is PD specific the principles used in the FFM training program including gait, balance and falls training are widely applicable to seniors and those with other neurological conditions.
